Covid-19: Maharashtra govt to take final decision on lockdown today, says NCP leader Nawab MalikNCP leader Nawab Malik has said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government is likely to take a final call on full lockdown in Maharashtra on MondayThe Nationalist Congress Party leader and Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik on Monday said that the state government is likely to take the final call on full lockdown in the state after a detailed meeting on Monday.

 

The Maharashtra government has been pondering over a full lockdown for the past few days as the Covid-19 outbreak has been continuing in the state unabated. On Sunday, Maharashtra recorded over 63,000 Covid-19 cases, which is 37 per cent of around 1.70 lakh cases reported across the country.

 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, had on Saturday, said the government will have to impose strict restrictions in order to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission. “If the Covid-19 cycle is to be broken, strict restrictions will have to be imposed, albeit temporarily,” he said.

 

Speaking to the media on Monday, Nawab Malik confirmed that the decision on lockdown in Maharashtra will be taken on Monday.

 

“The decision would be taken today after a detailed discussion. The government will definitely do what is needed to save the lives of the people of the state,” Nawab Malik said.

The minister also slammed BJP leader and former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnvais for demanding a Rs 50,000 crore package before the announcement of the lockdown.

 

“[Prime Minister Narendra] Modi did not consult anyone before imposing the lockdown in the country nor did he plan to deposit money in anyone’s account. It is not right on part of the BJP to make random statements just for the sake of politics,” Nawab Malik said.The BJP leader [Fadnavis] is talking about various packages in lieu of the lockdown. Such demands for the sake of doing politics are not good,” he said.

 

The NCP leader, however, assured that the Maharashtra government will do “what needs to be done without hurting the state’s economy”.

 

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has been asking the Maha Vikas Aghadi government of announcing a Rs 50,000-crore package for farmers, labourers and workers of the unorganised sector to offset the losses incurred due to restrictions imposed to curb Covid-19.
